hiTRAN.SP Update
Benefits of hiTRAN.SP Update
Version V5.2 has been released and is now available on our website
Overview
Cal Gavin has developed a unique software program that functions as a plug-in and a standalone version, to calculate performance of tubular heat exchangers equipped with hiTRAN Wire Matrix Elements.
The plug-in integrates with Aspentech Exchanger Design & Rating®, the most powerful heat exchanger design packages on the market, and enables an engineer to design a fully optimised heat exchanger.
New improved release
The new release Version 5.2 (both plug-in and standalone), now allows for calculations of tubes ranging from 6mm to 42mm (previously 12mm to 28mm) internal diameter. The underlying heat transfer and pressure drop data for those tube dimensions are backed up by extensive heat transfer research in our in house test facility.
There are also numerous useful improvements and bug fixes in the new version.

hiTRAN.SP works as a Plug-in for Aspentech
When installed on your computer, the hiTRAN.SP software package contains a plug-in which integrates into Aspentech. Within each software program you can utilise hiTRAN.SP to design hiTRAN optimised heat exchangers, and receive a unique hiTRAN part number. Once provided to our engineers, we can further assist your enquiry.
Aspentech supported programs: Integrates with Aspen Exchanger Design & Rating V7.2 or above:
- Aspen Air Cooled Exchanger
- Aspen Shell & Tube Exchanger
Key features of hiTRAN.SP
- Calculation Algorithm takes up all of the allowable pressure drop, to be converted into heat transfer (Specified by the user).
- Unique Insert design expressed in unique Part Number – hiTRAN Part number assists our engineers in guaranteeing the specific performance increase available for your application.
- Online help – Extensive help available for software, future updates to come.
- Incremental Calculation – Plug-in in for Aspentech performs heat transfer and pressure drop calculations for each increment.
- U- tube exchanger calculation – Effects of U-tube exchangers considered when performing calculations
- Different wall correction factors for different Insert Geometry
Extensive experimental research at Cal Gavin’s test facility has been undertaken in order to determine valid wall viscosity correction factors as a function of Reynolds and hiTRAN wire matrix geometry.
- For air coolers hiTRAN Inserts can be assigned to certain tube passes only.
In Aspentech it is possible to select defined tube passes for the use of hiTRAN thermal systems. This can be useful in case’s where only limited pressure drop is available. It can also be used to tailor wall temperatures in certain tube passes under temperature sensitive fouling conditions such as wall waxing.
