Manifold distribution

The work has been carried out to identify flow distribution in the overhead system of an Ethylene plant Quench Tower. The performance of the condensers and the arrangement of the pipework between them suggest that the assumptions made regarding the distribution of flow might be false. The pipework is highly asymmetric, and the bundle designs vary between units. In order to understand the effect of this, computational flow modelling has been used to predict the distribution of flow around the system.

The results of the simulation suggest that the vapour flow is significantly maldistributed at the entrance to the second row condensers.  A concurrent thermal analysis of the condensers also suggested an imbalance in duty between the two primary condensers. In combination, these factors for the poor overall performance of the overhead system.
