In many refining and petrochemical processes, valuable products, solvents and intermediates are recovered from vapour streams by condensation.  In many cases the condensation process itself is complex, involving multi-component mixtures with non-ideal thermodynamics.  Cal Gavin ESD’s experience in modelling such systems enables improvement opportunities to be identified and acted upon. Optimisation of condensation efficiency will improve product yields and minimise emissions control requirements.

A Product Recovery Study consists of three stages:

AUDIT
Within the scope of the study, a database of process condensers will be compiled.  Information regarding flows, temperatures etc will be collected and reconciled as necessary.  Product loss will be quantified and sources traced.

MODELLING
Where sources of product loss have been identified at the audit stage, detailed modelling of the relevant condensers will be carried out.  This step allows the opportunity for improvement to be quantified, and points to possible solutions.

SOLUTIONS IMPLEMENTATION
The audit and modelling stages will highlight operational improvements which can be implemented, and Cal Gavin’s detailed heat exchanger engineering experience will pinpoint cost-effective revamp opportunities.
