Feed/effluent exchanger for p-Xylol production

hiTRAN increase gas treatment capacity in Sulfinol®
plant at Nam

PLANT

NAM (Shell/Esso Joint Venture)
Natural gas treatment facility,
Emmen, The Netherlands.

SERVICE

Lean Sulfinol®solvent air-coolers.

EXCHANGER

Plug head air cooler:
7 tube rows (passes),
4 parallel bundles (2 items),
287 tubes/bundle: 9.5m long with embedded fins.

PROBLEM

Already operating at their limit, the 2 coolers. Lower outlet temperature required to provide increased absorption capacity downstream.

SOLUTION

Analysis by CALGAVIN engineers determined that the enhancement of tubeside heat transfer using customised HiTRAN Thermal Systems Technology, would sufficiently reduce Sulfinol outlet temperature and so provide the required increase in gas absorption capacity. Furthermore this would be possible by a partial retrofit of the tube bundles using a light element, within the available pressure drop. Consequently, 2 out of the 7 row plug head bundles were fitted.

BENEFIT

A 20% uplift in duty resulted in an outlet temperature down by 4.5ºC. Increased absorption capacity Extended service life More flexible operation
