Topic 2: Cooling Near a Pour Point

This webinar is the second in a series (Overcoming Challenges in Heat Exchanger Design) which addresses a range of common heat exchanger design challenges. Each webinar in the series focuses on a particular issue in heat exchanger design, examining the background to the problem and comparing typical solutions. The format of the webinars will encourage audience interaction and the sharing of relevant knowledge and experience.


In this second session, the challenges involved in the cooling of liquids near to their pour points will be addressed. This issue typically arises with hydrocarbon mixtures containing high-molecular weight components. Such mixtures have a pour point temperature, below which they cease to flow as liquids. When cooling these fluids the heat transfer surface must be maintained at a temperature above the pour point to avoid operational problems and the heat exchanger must be specifically designed to achieve this goal. The webinar will define the problem, discuss possible solutions and use examples to compare the results of the various strategies available.
